SEER
SEER is an acronym for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The minimum SEER today is 13 (basically BTU's of cooling per watt of electricity). The federal government mandates this 13 rating. Each manufacturer must conduct SEER tests for each of its air conditioning systems in a government-approved laboratory.

For you to attain the highest SEER (the lowest power use), your air conditioning system must be designed and installed correctly by trained and caring people. Often the actual SEER in a home is much lower than rated which causes a higher than necessary electric bill. Similarly, if you purchase a new automobile you will see it has a rated MPG number displayed on the window. Adverse variables such as heavy loads, mountainous terrain, and/or under inflated tires, would cause your MPG to be much lower than what was printed on the window sticker. Adverse variables with your air conditioning system include ductwork, cooling coil attachment, air takeoffs, refrigerant line size, and refrigerant charge to name a few.

The point is the actual SEER of the air conditioning equipment (in your home or work place) depends on how your air conditioner is installed and serviced.

REFRIGERANTS
Various refrigerants are best suited to particular applications. Residential and light commercial air conditioners run on R-22 and R-410A.

In 1987 in Montreal Canada, the United States joined 24 other nations in signing the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. In 1988, the United States Environmental Protection Agency enacted the provisions of this agreement into regulations for the U.S. All the refrigerants mentioned above were affected. R-12 and R-502 have already been banned for use in new products. Their current cost makes them almost prohibitive to use for major repairs.

Refrigerant is often referred to by the trade name of Freon. The name Freon is owned by Du Pont who really developed the refrigerant business. In 1956, they released the numbering system, R-12, R-22, R-502, etc, that became the industry standard that is still in use today. Carrier Corporation is providing a more environmentally friendly refrigerant - Puron.
