AIR CONDITIONING
Tidewater Heating & Air conditioning offers the best in manufactured equipment and quality installation to provide you with true comfort. We also offer systems utilizing new environmentally friendly refrigerant.

When your home or business requires a new air conditioner, call or e-mail us today and we will schedule, at your convenience, a Comfort Analysist to visit with you to determine the best solution for your needs.

SEER
SEER is an acronym for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The minimum SEER today is 13 (basically BTU's of cooling per watt of electricity). The federal government mandates this 13 rating. Each manufacturer must conduct SEER tests for each of its air conditioning systems in a government-approved laboratory.

For you to attain the highest SEER (the lowest power use), your air conditioning system must be designed and installed correctly by trained and caring people. Often the actual SEER in a home is much lower than rated which causes a higher than necessary electric bill. Similarly, if you purchase a new automobile you will see it has a rated MPG number displayed on the window. Adverse variables such as heavy loads, mountainous terrain, and/or under inflated tires, would cause your MPG to be much lower than what was printed on the window sticker. Adverse variables with your air conditioning system include ductwork, cooling coil attachment, air takeoffs, refrigerant line size, and refrigerant charge to name a few.

The point is the actual SEER of the air conditioning equipment (in your home or work place) depends on how your air conditioner is installed and serviced.

REFRIGERANTS
Various refrigerants are best suited to particular applications. Residential and light commercial air conditioners run on R-22 and R-410A.

In 1987 in Montreal Canada, the United States joined 24 other nations in signing the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. In 1988, the United States Environmental Protection Agency enacted the provisions of this agreement into regulations for the U.S. All the refrigerants mentioned above were affected. R-12 and R-502 have already been banned for use in new products. Their current cost makes them almost prohibitive to use for major repairs.

Refrigerant is often referred to by the trade name of Freon. The name Freon is owned by Du Pont who really developed the refrigerant business. In 1956, they released the numbering system, R-12, R-22, R-502, etc, that became the industry standard that is still in use today. Carrier Corporation is providing a more environmentally friendly refrigerant - Puron.

HEATING
Tidewater Heating & Air has been installing furnaces for over 35 years. We continue to use old fashion craftsmanship to install today's high efficiency equipment. Tidewater provides you with all available options in heating equipment today.

Heating equipment primarily uses three different fuel sources: gas, electricity, and/or oil. You may have one or all of these available to you.

Gas Options
80+ AFUE Forced Air Gas Furnaces with multi speed and variable speed blowers
90+ AFUE Forced Air Gas Furnaces with multi speed and variable speed blowers

Multi Speed Blowers
These blowers are installed in furnaces and typically have 4 settings available: low, medium low, medium high, and high speed. The speed is set by the servicing technician to accommodate your needs. Most often the fan is set at a lower speed for heating and a higher speed for cooling.

Variable-Speed-Blower-Motors
These motors are "smart" motors and are available in selected furnaces and air handlers. The variable speed blower works in conjunction with other controls to adjust the required blower speed to your home's heating and cooling requirements. On mild days, the blower will operate at lower speeds than on hotter and colder days. The lower blower speed results in quieter operation and better filtration of the air.

AFUE - an acronym for ANNUAL FUEL UTILIZATION ENERGY, a way to compare the efficiency of furnaces. The higher the AFUE, the higher the efficiency and the lower the fuel usage, resulting in lower operating costs.

Gas Boilers - available in both steam and hot water models. Boilers are often found in historic homes, using radiators to distribute heat. Boilers are also connected to in-floor piping systems to warm the whole structure.

Oil Boilers - available in steam and hot water

Electric Option
Heat Pumps - are efficient systems to both heat and cool your home or office. By utilizing the refrigeration cycle, heat pumps are more efficient than electric furnaces. Heat pumps may also be added to a gas or oil furnace.

Oil Options
Oil Furnaces - available in upflow, downflow, and horizontal applications
